Savannah Kennel Club raises funds for disaster relief trailer

SAVANNAH, Georgia (WTOC) – In the event of a disaster, how will you take care of your pets?

Many people leave their pets behind because they are not allowed in hotels or shelters. It’s a reality for many, and the Savannah Kennel Club is on a mission to change that.

“For me, this is an atrocity,” said Donna Pfendler Merkle.

Merkle, along with the Savannah Kennel Club, thinks a Pet Disaster Relief trailer is long overdue.

“I was shocked to find that no one on the coast had this, especially since we’re hurricane-prone, so it’s something that is absolutely necessary,” Merkle said.

The trailer would house or evacuate 65 pets in the critical first days after a disaster is declared. The club is to raise $ 20,000 to bring the fully stocked trailer here.

They asked the Disc Dogs to help them raise awareness and organize a series of events in late September.

“My wife and I are one of those people, if we couldn’t take our pets, we would keep our pets, if we didn’t have a safe place to put them. When they told us about this trailer, it’s such a great idea. I have some great sponsors coming in to help out, and we really hope to take that step, ”said Jim Fox of the Southeast Disk Dog Club.

If this year’s WagFest – which features a golf tournament, 5k and a “Pawty” – is successful, next year the Kennel Club will raise funds for another trailer for a neighboring county.

“If we can get a trailer network in our community, we’ll be so strong and helpful to each other,” Merkle said.
