Mississippi Gulf Coast Kennel Club Hosts “Paws Under the Oaks” Event

GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) — On Saturday, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Kennel Club got a round of applause in Gulfport.

“Paws Under the Oaks” attracted approximately 100 dogs representing approximately 40 different breeds as part of the American Kennel Club’s “Responsible Dog Ownership Day”.

The three-hour event took place at Centennial Plaza and featured a variety of demonstrations. The dogs and their owners were challenged with agility races. They have been tested on obedience and civility. The crowd enjoyed some entertainment with a few tricks, and the Gulf Coast search and rescue dogs showed off their skills. It was also a chance for pets and their owners to just enjoy the day.

“[A.K.C.] does this every year on this day, and they are very interested in introducing the public to over 200 different breeds recognized by the AKC,” said Carl Grotton. “We want the public to obviously see that there are many different breeds out there and we want them to know that they are great pets as well as great show dogs.”

Next, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Kennel Club will hold its 11th annual Southern Harvest Classic dog show Nov. 4-6 at the Harrison County Fairgrounds Arena.
