How to watch the 2021 CanAm Classic Flyball – American Kennel Club
Dogs, people and clubs from across North America and beyond come together every October for the world’s largest Flyball tournament: the CanAm Flyball Classic. This prestigious event has taken place every year since 2009 with the exception of 2020 due to COVID-19.
Comprised of three one-day tournaments and two championship tournaments, the whole event is non-stop, fun action. The 2021 event takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
How to watch the CanAm Classic Flyball
Before you look, it helps to review some basics about action-packed relay sport.
How does Flyball work? Two teams of four dogs line up to compete on a course that includes four hurdles and a box spring for each team. When the last light in the set turns green, the first dog on each team rolls down the aisle over each hurdle towards the box springs, triggering the box with its paw to release a ball which they catch at top speed. ‘flash. Then, by removing the box, the dogs come back running on the jumps and return to their master. The dogs then go relay style, going nose to nose at the start / finish line until all four dogs have successfully completed the course with the fastest team winning the round.
Which dogs can compete in Flyball? All dogs, including mixed breeds, are eligible to participate in Flyball as long as they are 15 months or older.
What is a Flyball team? Four dogs and four human handlers make up a Flyball team. Additionally, there is a human boxloader and two dog / handler saves.
How do you win? The first team whose four dogs cross the finish line without error wins the round. The team that wins the most rounds in a race (eg 3 out of 5) wins.
What is the CanAm Flyball Classic?
The annual CanAm Flyball Classic is the world’s premier tournament for the sport of Flyball. Hundreds of dogs of all skills come from the United States, Canada and other countries. All teams can enter Regular, Mulibreed or Open Classic classes. At the end of the weekend, the fastest teams qualify to compete in the CanAm Regular and CanAm Multibred Championships.
Ordinary: teams made up of all breeds of dogs and / or mixed breeds
Multirace: teams consist of four different races, or three different races and one mixed race.

If watching Flyball on TV makes you think your dog would love to compete, you are probably right! The best way to get started in Flyball is to find a club near you that offers classes. Flyball is a team sport, so it’s important to find a team that works for you and your dog.
If you are not ready to attend a class, many clubs run online classes and seminars, and you can try practice jumps with equipment at home.
