Credential Recognition Program – American Kennel Club

“A dream does not come true by magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work. – Colin Powell

There are many reasons to invest the time and resources necessary to have your dog’s abilities recognized: you could do it to show off his superior abilities; or you could do it for the personal satisfaction that comes from hard work. Or both. Either way, achieving a goal you set for yourself is something you are very proud of, and that is why we offer many titling programs for dog owners to ensure their dog’s accomplishments are recognized by the American Kennel Club. Learn more about the types of credential recognition programs available. Almost all of these programs welcome all dogs, purebred or mixed.

  • To start

    +

As with any sport, we recommend that you find an AKC club near you with a training facility for the sport you are interested in. Once you are ready, your club can help you find events to attend.

Earning a title means you can add it to your dog’s permanent AKC record, but, above all, it’s a great reminder of the hard work and determination you and you shared.

  • Title eligibility

    +

Each title has its own eligibility conditions. Choose the event that interests you to find out the eligibility rules:

Your dog must also be registered or registered with the AKC by one of these options:

    • AKC Registration Number – This number is provided to a dog owner via a registration certificate received from the previous owner, or via a puppy registration document given to the new owner by the breeder.
    • Alternative Purebred List (PAL) – If a dog is purebred but an AKC registration number is not possible, owners can apply for a PAL number
    • AKC Canine Partners Number – This number is assigned to mixed or purebred dogs.
    • Foundation Stock Service® Number (FSS) – This number is used for breeds whose status is currently at the fundamental stage of being registered in our registry and requires a copy of the dog’s pedigree.
