AKC Trick Dog – American Kennel Club

Your dog must have an AKC number via a from the following:

  • AKC Registration Number – This number is provided to a dog owner via a registration certificate received from the previous owner, or via a puppy registration document given to the new owner by the breeder.
  • Alternative Purebred List (PAL) – If a dog is purebred but an AKC registration number is not possible, owners can apply for a PAL number.
  • AKC Canine Partners Number – This number is assigned to mixed or purebred dogs.

While dogs can begin training for the tricks titles as puppies, the earliest an AKC Trick Dog title will be awarded by the AKC is 4 months old.

To be eligible for the AKC Trick Dog Novice title, your dog must have been observed by a CGC assessor completing 10 laps from the list of accepted laps. If you have a Good Canine Citizen (CGC) certificate or title, you can count the CGC as 5 of the required rounds. This is called “CGC + 5”.

To be eligible for the AKC Intermediate Trick Dog, your dog must have the Novice title and complete 10 intermediate laps. In Intermediate Trick Dog, with the exception of a few tricks, you will wilt lures that were allowed at Novice level. See the list of tips here.

To be eligible for the AKC Trick Dog Advanced title, your dog must have been observed by a CGC assessor completing 10 rounds of the accepted rounds list, and must have already obtained the Novice and Intermediate dog titles. The CGC is not required.

To be eligible for the AKC Trick Dog Performer title, your dog must have been observed by a CGC assessor completing ten laps of the Novice, Intermediate and Advanced titles, and must include at least two intermediate laps and two advanced laps. Your dog must also have previously obtained the Novice, Intermediate and Advanced Trick Dog titles. The CGC is not required. In this case, your routine might have a story (eg, “That’s my dog ​​Princess. The princess loves school – here’s what she does at school. To be eligible for the AKC Trick Dog Elite Performer, at the highest level of Trick Dog, Elite Performers perform a routine that has a story / storyline. At least 5 props are used and at least 5 tips must be Trick Dog Performer level. See the requirements here.
